Scope and Basic Function: This position serves as the main deckhand and tour guide for Essex Heritage’s tours of Bakers Island Light, Misery Island, and Salem Sound. Provides support to lead Captain of Naumkeag landing craft operated by Essex National Heritage Commission for trips to and from Bakers Island Light and Misery Island. Conducts a variety of guided tours around Salem Sound for passengers while ensuring their safety and enforcing Essex Heritage policies.   • Selling tickets for tours through Eventbrite app

Essex Heritage is seeking a licensed captain to operate, Naumkeag, our 18-passenger Munson aluminum cat-pak 32’ with two 225hp outboard Hondas for trips from Salem's commercial dock to Bakers Island Light Station, Misery Island beaches, as well as harbor cruises. 

The Boat Captain has the ultimate responsibility for passengers, crew, and operation and maintenance of the vessel, and must know and abide by all appropriate maritime laws. The Boat Captain will be assisted by a qualified deckhand who will check in passengers, assist passengers to disembark and embark at the island beaches, and will conduct any on-island tours. The Boat Captain will work with the Bakers Island Light Program Manager to ensure proper documentation, safety equipment, and maintenance/inspections are in order, as well as work on seasonal program planning. 

 

The Boat Captain must possess a US Coast Guard Master Captain’s license (minimum 25 ton, inland) and must be current and in good standing. Beach landings require confidence and skill especially in windy conditions, so the ability to make good judgments and avoid risks to the passengers, boat and organization is required. Prior boat tour, duck tour, or similar public tour experience is preferred. Experience driving a twin-engine vessel is a plus.

 

The Boat Captain must agree to enroll in Essex Heritage’s random drug and alcohol screening program. All candidates will be subject to a routine pre-employment background check before hiring.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Boston Harbor Islands Boat Operator’s primary responsibility is to:

  • Navigate vessels, inshore and offshore, tow and transport persons, equipment, and material.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of vessels with knowledge of the carrying capacity and limits of stability of each vessel.
  • Participate in the maintenance, towing and installation of docks, wharves, piers, floats, and associated hardware.

  • Maintenance of fleet vessels within ability

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in the operation and maintenance of  vessels. A Radiotelephone Third Class Operator license/permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission. Must have a current TWIC card and First Aid/CPR certification.

*** Possession of a Masters License (minimum of 50 tons) for inland waters issued by the US Coast Guard.

LOCATION:

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is a major steward of the commonwealth’s natural and cultural resources. Commercial marine experience a plus but not required.  Hours are Mon-Fri 7am-5pm and Sat 7am-Noon.40-hour work week.   Must be able to lift 60 plus lbs. Job Title: Marine Electronics Technician                                                            

Major Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates an ability to design and install an integrated marine electronic systems.
  • Exhibits the ability and knowledge to solve most marine electronic issues on board with effective and efficient trouble shooting techniques.
  • Demonstrate professional customer service skills.
  • Ability to provide proper documentation.
  • Maintaining accurate records of time spent performing the services requested by the customer and expenses incurred on the job.

Requirements:

·         Possess a demonstrated ability and knowledge of the principals of electricity

·         Ability to comply with all established methods, quality standards and time schedules applicable to this position.

·         Possess sufficient technical skills to work independently or as a member of a team of installers.

·         Must have basic carpentry and mechanical skills.

·         Must own basic tools.

·         Ability to work from drawings and technical manuals.

·         Must have valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to the customer’s job site.

·         Frequent overtime may be required during peak seasons.

Education and Experience:

·         Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a two year college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         NMEA and ABYC certification or willing to obtain.

·         USCG Captains License preferred or willing to obtain.
