JOB OBJECTIVE
The service technician / mechanic contributes to the service of various styles of boats that come through our service department, with a primary focus on the express cruising power yachts our production department creates. The service technician’s objective is to install and/or repair electrical and mechanical systems on our yachts to ABYC and other applicable standards.   • Schedule, coordinate, and follow-up on sublet contractors.
  • Inspect quality of work performed as required, prior to delivery to the customer.
  • Finalize and invoice work orders.
  • Provide prompt, detailed and timely flow of all paperwork.

The ideal candidate should have 1 - 3 years experience working at a marina/boatyard and have familiarity with hydraulic trailers and forklifts as well as some experience setting boats on blocks and stands.
 
 Duties will include but not be limited to assisting with hauling and launching of boats up to 60 feet, power washing, setting boats on blocks and stands for winter storage, maintenance of marina equipment, docks, buildings, and grounds.
 
 This is a full-time, year-around position. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Basic mechanical, carpentry and plumbing skills are desirable.
 
 Candidate should be comfortable removing winter covers, bottom painting, power washing, and shrink wrapping. Candidate must be able to work in a busy, fast-paced, physical environment, and in all weather conditions. Must be in good overall health and able to walk, stand, crawl and climb frequently and lift up to 50 lbs. The candidate must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and have or be able to obtain a Massachusetts DOT medical card.

Job Description:

Position: This position is an Instructor in the Marine Systems Program at the Landing School. It is a full-time, permanent position functioning within the direct supervision of the Dean of Education, hired by the President of the School.

Objective: The Marine Systems program teaches students the skills and knowledge necessary to install, maintain and repair today’s increasingly complex boat and yacht systems using established industry standards. The curriculum also serves as an effective preparation for those students seeking American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) marine systems certification.

Duties and Responsibilities: In fulfillment of the objectives, the Marine Systems Instructor will:

  • Continue to develop and improve of the curriculum through development of syllabus, lesson plans, teaching equipment/materials, and scheduling of student work
  • Work directly with students, with primary responsibility for lectures, demonstrations, bench work, practice applications, and yacht quality installations and repairs of marine systems in customer boats
  • Assist students in learning individually, in small groups and as a class through clear communication; patient, understanding, approach; thorough and professional knowledge; mature leadership; and positive, honest academic advice
  • Evaluate student learning through questioning, homework, practical and theoretical testing, and certifying exams
  • Prepare students for and proctor certification exams
  • Share in the administrative tasks of the development and successful operation of the program, as assigned by the Dean of Education
  • Demonstrate, teach, and enforce shop safety requirements and procedures
  • Plan fieldtrips

Qualifications:
  • Associates degree or better
    Minimum of four years working in industry, in a boatyard setting, preferably as systems technician or manager, involved in all aspects of yacht service and repair
  • Practical experience in the installation and maintenance of complex marine systems including engines and propulsion, AC and DC marine electrical systems, marine plumbing systems, fiberglass and metal yacht structural repair
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Project management skills, including estimating, budgeting, resource planning and Gantt charts a strong plus
  • Ability to climb a ladder and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb into and around small spaces in boats
  • ABYC Certified Technician a strong plus
  • Management experience a plus

The Marine Systems Lead Instructor is responsible for all aspects of the delivery of the IYRS Marine Systems curriculum which encompasses electrical, electronics, systems, diesel and outboard engines, while modeling the work values, standards of craftsmanship and instruction that are at the core of IYRS’ mission.

  • To fulfill these responsibilities, the Lead Instructor will:

12. Place follow up call to the customer with in one week of delivery.
13. Greet delivery drivers to help unload new units received at the dealership.
14. Check in units by verifying serial numbers on each unit against invoice.
15. Once bar codes labels have been printed, place bar codes on units received.
16. Assist with physical inventories.
17. May be required to serve as back up to Service Writer and / or Warranty Clerk positions.
18. Maintain a clean and professional work area.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have at least one-year full time, or equivalent part-time experience in the operation and maintenance of vessels. Must possess a 50-ton inland USCG masters license. Local knowledge of navigating in and around Boston Harbor may be substituted for experience. Must have a valid TWIC card, CPR/First Aid, and radiotelephone operators license.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is a major steward of the commonwealth’s natural and cultural resources. The Boston Harbor Island natural recreation area is a unique partnership park with an abundance of natural and cultural resources that offers tremendous recreational and educational opportunities. DCR owns 16.5 of the 34 islands and peninsulas in the park and actively staffs six of the islands that are accessible by public ferry during the recreational season.
